Our research falls into three main areas. First, we work to understand how bacteria evolve during human infection to resist antibiotics and host immune defenses. Second, we study how resistant bacteria share genes with one another in the hospital. Third, we develop new approaches to treat resistant bacterial infections more effectively.

Bedside to Bench
We sequence the genomes of bacteria isolated from human infections and use functional genomics to identify and characterize novel resistance mechanisms. These include the ability of bacteria to persist in the face of antibiotic pressure, or resist the host immune system.

Bench to Bedside
We work to develop new antibiotics that can treat drug-resistant infections. We help characterize new types of molecules and understand how novel compounds kill bacteria. We are also developing bacteriophages as novel therapeutics.
